In this poignant book, the writer and investigative journalist Katharine Quarmby describes the 20-year search for her Iranian birth father and her own adoption history. She links this narrative to the wider story that she uncovered during her search - of the many missing Iranian military fathers, who disappeared after the Iranian Revolution, but who are still sought by so many Iranian love-children in Britain today. Her narrative is a meditation on the importance of both birth and adoptive families - and a challenge to those who would set aside the importance of race as a factor in adoption. She describes what it feels like to search and discover your roots, in a moving story that takes her to Iran undercover, on a secret visit - a visit that changes her forever. The love of the parents who raised her gave her the courage to find her birth father. This is her tribute to both her families.

Blood and Water An AngloIranian Love Story (Audible Audio Edition) Katharine Quarmby Polly Lee Audible Studios Books Reviews
Great book. Like so many other adopted people while the birth family offers connections the adopted family is home. Enjoyed reading this book.
I was moved by this work by Ms. Quarmby. As an American adoptee who also searched and successfully found her Iranian birthfather I was excited to read her story. She sincerely and eloquently expresses her experience and inner complications of growing up without knowing her heritage and blood relatives. Her account of feeling a part of two cultures at once as she travels to Iran to see her father underlines the complexity of the impact of the political environment there on her personal experience. She touches on important issues of being an adoptee of mixed race in the 60s. She also writes about the conflicting emotions one has as an adoptee who assimilates her newly found birth parent with her adoptive family. It's a positive story of love and finding lost family. I encourage everyone who is interested in Iranian history, adoption history, and personal identity explorations to read this!
An unusual love story involving the Iranian military while posted in England and the women they left behind. The author, the result of one of these unions, tracks her father. She was lucky having been brought up by an adoring adopted family and later finding her father who was delighted with their reunion, and she who found a huge sense of relief.
But not everyone is so fortunate, read this thought provoking book.
